Various stages of a run of the mill type of damage to a Victorian floor in this case tenting /heave caused by underlying screed drying out causing shrinkage, also pipe holes drilled through for radiator pipes. tiles used to restore this floor were re-claimed from the small ante-space floor (silver tape across it) damaged sections were lifted sides & backs of tilers cleaned of adhered mortar, screed is ground down to accept a bed of adhesive which the re-claimed tiles are beaten into with a rubber hammer and use of an oak board to beat the replacement tiles flat to the adjacent tiles.
because shrinking has occurred some of the tiles will always need to be trimmed otherwise it is impossible to fit them back into place, in this contract I opted to cut tiles incrementally along the border rather than the field as that would mean cutting tiles such as the patterned (encaustic tiles ).
