Quality Assurance on Product and Method prior to commencing job

I'm in the process of replacing my bathroom which involves re. tiling and laying underfloor heating.

I have already purchased the tiles, UFH and bathroom suite.

The tiles that I am using are large format honed and filled travertine. I've knocked up a document with what I intend to do and the products that I intend to buy for those that care to read it, please find it here: http://www.oldhamsofwestcliff.co.uk/tiling/ I guess what I am asking - is this approach sensible and the products that I am buying fit for purpose?

More specific questions:

Can I tile directly onto the UFH mat? or must I use a SLC?
Should I leave a gap between tile and wall, if so what gap would be sensible?
Should I seal the tiles before laying them?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Hello Andy and welcome.

One point out of what you intend to do is this one..

Point 3 Fit Hardiebacker Board
I’ve already bought some Bal Blue star to support underneath the board. Lay board with a 3mm gap to wall filled with mastic, nail sheets to floorboard. Wipe, force adhesive into joints and tape – feather joint.

You cannot use a dispersion adhesive to void fill or adhere these boards...

Point 5.. are you qualified to do that with the UFH and thermostat..?

Point 7... You will only need to use 200 to 300 grit to finish the edges and then just grout the edges, this will fill any minor holes ..

The rest seems fine but make sure the substrate will hold the weight, some travertines of good quality will exceed the weight limits for the substrate

Cheers Dave, thanks for taking the time to read, its typical i read any adheasive would do! What would you recommend, floor boards underneath...

Also, I dont need to lay any SLC then?

Use a cement based flexi adesive under the boards.. some say normal will do but i like to use flex..

As for Slc.. it is advisable to use it over ufh.

defo SLC over the heating mat as it will flow into gaps better than addy. the wires should not have any air gaps around them.

do not use blue star use an spf and defo screw not nail boards to floor.

you do not need to prime the plasterboard prior to tiling.

Just a quick one.

The Stone Federation code of practice when applying Natural Stone over Electic Under floor heating includes the use of a decoupling membrane.

This is also stated in BS 5385 part 5 section 7.3

Almost a year since I completed this project, on this site for some more of the useful information I received last time. I thought it would be nice to provide some follow up inc pics. The job went well and I am very happy with the results, looks just as good today. I used backer board, SLC over the UFH and tiles the floor to that, I was amazed how much adhesive I got through (I may have gone overboard on the back buttering of the tiles). I did seal the walls prior as I got much conflicting advise on that part, the tiles are still up a year later so I guess that was the right thing to do. Quick set adhesive - their not joking esp. when it's warm.
