    Stubborn cement on bricks

I’ve done brick-slip pointing before, and one rule is to spray and wet the slips before hand. I also injected the mortar into the joints and finished it off with a small trowel. It’s different to pointing outdoor bricks. Because they aren’t bricks. They are brick-slips. Another builder out of...

Decent trade rated tiling shops in Leeds

I used to work the Leeds area a long time ago. I would suggest Tiles UK and opposite that is CTD.

Porcelain tiled kitchen floor - cracking after 2 days

Dot n dab is also not acceptable as a means of fixing tiles. It’s used in putting up dry walls and laying outdoor paving slabs, but in tiling it’s not acceptable at all. For tiles to be fixed on a surface, it required the surface to be flat +/- 4mm over 2m as a general rule. So, if a tiler has...

Porcelain tiled kitchen floor - cracking after 2 days

Hi Lisa, This sounds bad to me unfortunately. If the sub-floor was not prepared properly to receive tiles (cement board on top of a solid wooden floor) then tile failure will happen. Perhaps ask for a refund from this person who is not a tiler and call up somebody who is qualified?

Tiling on hardwall - is this a big no no?

So, a quick and cost-effective way of solving the issue is to create a suitable background to receive tiling. Without viewing the walls, I would suggest over-boarding the walls using 12.5mm plasterboard using dry wall adhesive (if suitable to do so). Then use a tanking kit to prepare and make...

Opinions please on ongoing floor tiling job

A "job" that will not last. Poorly prepared background, badly executed tiling, with tile failure most probable. Plastic lift clips won't allow the required thick-bed solid-bed of adhesive between the tile and substrate from what I can see in the photos provided. They will create a void much...

    What's wrong with these pictures??

It's not tiling. What has been done is an attempt to stick solid objects onto a wall. Buy cheap, buy twice.

Porcelain tiled kitchen floor - cracking after 2 days

Did he check the existing floor for movement before over boarding? Loose floorboards won't be strengthened with plywood. Which is now not widely accepted as a suitable substrate to receive tiles. He should have fixed a cement board to overlay the existing solidly-fixed flooring (presuming it's...

Tiling on hardwall - is this a big no no?

Never listen to a builder when it comes to tiling. Tiling work is subject to much more strict regulations than builders follow. Builders don't care once they have done their bit at a tolerance of +/- 20mm. The tilers tolerance is +/- 4mm on a suitable substrate over 2m.

Advise please - Great Work, Poor Service

Glad you are happy with the job so far, but he's light on the price which makes me wonder... 38m2 requires at least 10 bags of adhesive (20 Kg each) and about 20 Kg of grout. No Silicon priced in? He's under-priced materials for a start. Happy to write-off £280 for joinery and the radiator...

Kitchen splashback metro tiles -is it a bad job?

"Is it a bad job"? Well it's certainly not tiling. The person who attempted to stick them on the wall is not a tiler.

Floor tiles on EPS underfloor boards - some questions

"According to the manufacturer, tiles can be laid directly on these boards using a recommended primer and S2 adhesive" Absolute nonsense! Instant tile failure! How would a primer absorb into metal? S2 adhesives can bond to metal, but not recommended to a flimsy sheet of foil, as the bond...

Help with laying 600x600 porcelain floor tiles

Gonna have to remove the tiles, and clean them up PERFECTLY clean on the underneath to remove any adhesive residue, as the new and proper cement-based adhesive will need to bond to the tiles. Board the floor using Hardibacker or other cement board if timber. Possibly level the floor as you are...

    Addy recommendation for mirror metro

EEESSH! Hi mate. I have used these in a kitchen (walls). They are horrible to work with! I used Ultra Pro Flex S2, but I think any powder S2 adhesive will work. I swerved even BAL White Star ready-mix as I think it fell short of the job looking at the spec. Grout wise, I used a smooth flexible...

Porcelain Re-grouting exterior porcelain paving tiles with white grout

Sorry, but I beg to differ. If the grout has come loose, then the tiles are unstable (bond failure). Your pressure washing has probably forced a lot of water underneath the tiles, and once a gap through the grout has been breached, then this water will freeze under cold conditions, and the...
