    Spiked rollers.

Some SLC's don't like spiked rollers. One that comes to mind is BAL Level Max. It has fibres in it and they don't like to be spiked. So check the instructions on your levelling compound.

    Hallway Tiling advice please

Sam, just a little bit more advice: Of course some customers try and save money by doing the prep themselves. However, lets say in a few weeks/months time a tile cracks or a bit of grout comes out. Whos fault is it? Was the prep done correctly? were all the boards screwed down? Were there...

    Hallway Tiling advice please

I personally use BAL FLEX ONE, but you can use any powered adhesive. The adhesive is really there to fill the voids over floorboards. The boards are then screwed (I use about 15 screws). A very important thing to remember is that the boards have to be taped with fiba tape. This bonds the boards...

    Laying 10mm tile

Some of the independent tile shops will usually have a trader that only lays wooden or laminate flooring. These guys can normally make a door threshold to your exact requirements. Look at paying £50+ for this. However, if you are handy you can pop down to Homebase and buy some profiled lengths...

    Hallway Tiling advice please

Question is: Will you still be able to open your front door will all that extra height? I would have gone for Hardibacker or Bal boards (both 6mm). As Dave says 'less height'.

Retrofit wet ufh under existing floor.

Been to a house this week. The owner wants a tiling quote to tile the ground floor of a house with 60x60 porcelain tiles over screeded wet ufh. The problem I have is that the 80sqm of ground floor consists of 8 rooms mostly over floorboards and a kitchen over a concrete floor. The owner is...

    Preparing tiles for Silicon

Now I know all the facts. You have a matt finish porcelain tile. Your tiler has cut the bottom row of tiles to fit around your shower (normal practice). Believe me, you do not need to seal the cut underneath of the tile. The sealer will not be absorbed by your tile as porcelain is virtually...

    Preparing tiles for Silicon

Ahh, this does make a difference. Just buy a quality Silicon. It does not have to be a solvent free one. I've just noticed I called the Silicon a 'sealer' in my previous post. I meant Silicon. Only some porcelain tiles need sealing. Some are pre sealed or nano sealed. It is normal to...

    Preparing tiles for Silicon

In my opinion the problem is that your tiler did not use a 'solvent free' Silicon. I can only presume that your tile is a natural stone, as you are trying to seal it with a stone sealer? You need to use a solvent free Silicon such as Mapesil LM. This Silicon is used for natural stone...

    Miss Coat on walls

Who is Miss Coat? Ha ha! You mean 'mist'. You are correct, you need to remove this paint mechanically. Try using a really cheap flexible scraper (you can get 3 for a pound at the £ shop). I find that those bladed scrapers dig into the plaster. On one occasion my customer was an artist and he...

Please Help? SBR issues in wet room

OMG !! Not a wetroom. Not a Tiler. Not a Plumber. No tanking. Tiling over paint. To help us could you take a photo from a distance so we can see the room/layout. I bet you feel sick. I'm sorry this has happened. I'm hoping you have not paid for this.

    Shmox leveling clips

I personally use a smaller width Schmox clip with a spacer. i.e. a 1.5mm clip used in conjunction with a 2mm spacer. If you just use the clip you stand a greater chance of chipping a tile when you kick or hammer the clip away, as sometimes tile adhesive gets caught up in the clip. So to...

    Should we accept?

I would say 'No'. There is a very high chance the two different batch numbers will look different colours in different lighting situations i.e. daylight/dark/lights on etc. Do you know where the tiles are coming from? If they came from Topps or CTD then the stores will have a record of what...

    Is my tiling acceptable?

Jayne, Do you have 2 windows in your bathroom? Or is that the stick on trim on the 6th picture? I have never heard of ‘stick on trim’. The trim around the boxed in section is appalling. This need to be redone. It would have been better to box the pipe in and have a removable panel. I would...

    Tips for setting out

This is the part of the job you can't rush. I use a laser level, a pen/pencil a length of batten with the height of the tile plus the spacer marked on it. Just to add to jcrtilings' list above......the ceiling and the floor can run out by many mm's so beware! The niche can be made slightly...
