160w UFH

Would we feel the heat through tiles with a 160w heating mat? just because it is low i am a bit worried, thanks

I'm by no means a specialist when it comes to UFH, but I'd guess folk would need more information on the whole floor set-up, before giving a yes or no? (concrete floor/boards/insulation boards/slc/type of tile etc)

sorry yes its on an old concrete floor which is levelled, insulation boards, ufh, slc and then 12mm tile.

You'd be better going for 200w which would give you radiant heat rather than just a warm floor.

thanks John, but Tile Mountain have said we can only have a 160w mat per sq m as its a quartz tile.

Has the manufacturer confirmed if the tiles can take the heat from your ufh....

Is it a resin tile or Quartz?

Yes tile mountain have confirmed this via email and we would order the heating mat and tiles from them so there would hopefully be no problem....

You are aware then that there have been problems with curling of certain Gulf tiles with Ufh?

yes we have and only a few companies have recommended ufh, tile mountain have said max 160w mat and also topps tiles say theirs is ok with ufh but theirs is double the price. Have you had any problems? thanks

A 160w/m2 underfloor heating mat system would be a full heating system depending upon the heating coverage of the total gross area, how well the dwelling is insulated and the heat loss figure for your gross area.
Insulation boards on your concrete/screed base is needed, but insulation should also be up to date on walls and ceiling.
Heat loss is via all these surfaces together with windows & doors. That is where a heat loss figure comes from.
85% coverage of the whole floor area is needed for heating, so if you are installing in a Kitchen etc, with no underfloor heating under kitchen units, your coverage may be lower than 85%
I would say that with all the information, that the 160w/m2 system may not be a heat system, but a minimum Warm Floor system (secondary heat) only.

Thank Keith that's really helpful. We have insulated all the walls with celotex insulated the loft, have a dg window with A rated glass. The heated towel rail has a high btu but I didn't know the coverage on floor needs to be 85% so thanks again for all the info.

I am guessing it is a Bathroom.
Find out your gross area. Find out your Net area (gross area less Bath, shower tray etc)
Underfloor Heating and a heated towel will be getting closer to full heating.
Approx 3413 btu's = 1000w. (1kw)
