Got to price up a 61m2 floor tomorrow. Natural stone on concrete screed. Biggest floor I have had to do, running between about 4 rooms. What else do I need to consider when pricing apart from the usuals of level, addy, grout. Can someone also give me a hint on expansion joints and how to do...ie where is best places to put them / hide them / how does the finish compare with the grout? I know many of those are not the easiest to answer without seeing the job, but any hints gratefully received.

Cheers

Chris

Probably the best place for expansion joints would be the doors between rooms. You can get proprietory joints from the likes of schluter but you may get away with Silicon the same colour as the grout you use.

Expansion joints should be every 10m i believe, and use a clear Silicon and finger it right into the gap.:whatchutalkingabout

Chris, i would agree with grumpy's advice. allow a 6mm joint at each of the doorways and Silicon with relevant colour. Dont grout around the periphery and the skirting will cover that space. Yids.....

good advice all the way, followed by the best bit!! Come on You Spurs!!!

Dave...just found out it is Trav 600x400. I guess it is honed and filled. They are also possibly wanting underfloor heating (warmup from Topps) according to sales bod in shop. He also said the husband said it was 50m2 and wife said 100m2...should be interesting tonight! Does the above help you with any of my original queries?

I would put a decoupling mat underneath if it is heated!

I would use a uncoupling/anti fracture mat with or without UFH......travertine can crack with expansion in the floor sometimes...so an uncoupling membrane makes sure it won't..always better to be safe when working with these softer stones...might be more expense on the project but cheaper than having to re-tile.........

If its Topps trav then may be an idea to sort through it b4 you lay m8 lot of dark veining in some of their stuff recently I noticed.....just to be safe ye

Membrane would be advisible as the others have already said

Expansion joints are every 10metres. You should also check that if they are in the screed then follow them. Another great method of expansion joint with Travertine is to fill the joint with foam strip and then grout over with a flexible grout with modifier. You weill then have the exact colour over the whole floor and its easier to maintain than Silicon for the client.

Got the job...thanks to everyones help / suggestions. BUT...she has said the floor down 20 years, will not pay for matting full stop. Did not listen to reason. So may get it all again when I go back to repair in a year or two's time!!!
