A Poll for Primer Application

I use brush and roller but have tried the spray method but that was for plastering and did'nt like it, seemed to lay on the surface...that was Sbr though and thinned down.

No ones really discussed this so good idea:
I spray large areas, but wipe any puddling off, but I also sponge it on, in smaller areas.
So it's a bit of both.

Sponge or brush for walls, and for priming plywood floors I use a grout float. What type of roller do you all use? Never tried a roller on floors but sounds like a quick way of doing it.

For priming over old tile adhesive before SLC, I use a stiff brush. Pulls the primer back out of the grooves.

I'm losing big style with the sprayer!!!!
It does work, not on all stuff, it's controlable and then you can back back roll for floors or wipe with a sponge for walls, it doesn't run down your arms.

What sprayer would you recommend? Just general purpose spray bottle?

i'm not a fan of spraying primers. i think its better to use a brush or a roller so it actually gets worked into the substrate.
if a surface substrate is low suction then a sprayed primer can sit on the surface whereas a brush or roller agitates it in more.

Not saying it doesn't work. I think it would struggle though on a low porosity substrate.

Never tried sprayer but how do you cut in tidy.I can imagine the primer ending up on things you dont want to prime

Totally agree Ajax about your thoughts here, i've been using this method and all the others for years and it really does work on the right job.

As i say you don't just spray it, it needs to be worked in so you can do that as you cut in. Obviously you can't use it in someones new kitchen!! But then primer on rollers, sponges and brushes aren't the most splash free method either.
I use a hand sprayer or the larger pump sprayer (green ones £15 B&Q) for big floors.

But some things have to be rolled or sponged, ie Mape Ecoprim grip etc.

I could be very wrong, but with a sprayer you could spray on to anhydrite for example a light coat, then back roller it, this way you can control how much is being applied, with a roller or a brush, you tend to slap a big dollop on and then push it around, which in my opinion could over saturate the substrate. If the floor looks like it needs some more priming, its very easy to do again, you can do it standing up and it gets done much quicker.

I use a sponge , it flys on.
If its a new sponge just damp it very slightly then ring right out , just stops the sponge soaking it right up , it goes on a treat.
