Acoustic underlay

I'm considering (ie I might have to) using an acoustic underlay. The only one I can find is Acoustilay. Thing is, it is very expensive ie £248.00 for 6.25m2. That's £40m2....Yikes!!

My questions are:

1. Does it work?
2. Is there another product?

how about sonic gold underlay I've used that lots of times 15sq m roll on ebay delivered its about 23£

I didn't know that could be used with tiles.

If it's owt like the acoustic plasterboard ,it's babber.
I'm sure someone will say its ace stuff,but how is a few MM of something going to stop sound, it just ain't physically possible, or is it ?

I have to say I'm very suspicious....but at that price it may have magical properties!!

It depends what you want deadening Ian, I have musician mates, who have recording studios in units, and have tried everything from acoustic whatchamacallits to hundreds of mms of insulation , nowt deadens it,nowt at all, unless your willing to spend thousands , then the worlds your oyster

Thanks, well £40m2 will cost thousands....and I ain't spending that just on the underlay, so my oyster's pretty small.

More seriously, I think I might be on thinnish ice as I want to lay tiles throughout in a flat that has concrete floors. I'm just wondering if I might get the no no unless I try and sound proof it. That said I can't really see us causing much of a noise to the folks below as we would always wear soft shoes or stocking soles/bare feet.

But, strictly speaking, I'm supposed to get the head leaseholder's permission to lay anything other than carpet. And I'm guessing soundproofing would make that easier.

used this ( may have been a diffo brand ) on one of the big builders sites , apartments , stuck down with Vinyl addy , and tile over top. Don't know if it work or not but it was specced for sound insulation on the concrete floors.

I had to tile over an acoustic underlay last summer in a penthouse apartment. Had Instamac spec it for me just to cover my tracks ie make sure I can guarantee the work. They insisted I leave a 10mm gap around all edges, walls, pillars etc. This basically meant no leveller, adhesive, grout or tile edge to be within 10mm of any edge. This gap was then filled with silicone. The skirtings were spaced 5mm above the tiles and that gap was siliconed. The thinking was that sound transferred through the solid structures in the apartments, so by using the silicone we alleviated the problem. I've not had to go back, so I'm presuming it worked!

Other than the edges, was it an ok job, was just a case of putting it down and getting on with the job?

Sorry for late reply, acoustic underlay was already down. It looked like a fairly dense, 10mm thick rubber matt. It was stuck solid, no bubbles or air pockets but I don't know what they'd used to fix it sorry. I primed it with neoprene primer then gave it a coat of leveller before fixing tiles with s1.

could do you a good deaL for the amount you need
