Adding tile trim after tiling

Hi, my kitchen was tiled a year ago but stupidly at the time I did not add any tile trim. I want to tidy it up now, and have bought plastic tile trim for the job.

I was going to try and file down the grout behind the top layer of tiles to try and fit the trim behind. Will this work? Or will I have to remove the top layer of tiles completely?

Any advice to a DIY learner would be helpful!

Hello Luci, I don’t think you will be able to fit a tile to the top row without removing the tiles

If you can find a suitability sized corner trim, might be easier than trying to cut out adhesive and slot behind tile.

Hello Luci, it is sometimes possible to do this depending on how much space there is behind the tiles. If the tiles are sitting very close the wall you'll probably struggle. You will need the help of one of the many types of oscillating multi tools which are available now. Carefully slide the blade down the back of the top row of tiles and slowly cut/remove the set adhesive. Its a good idea to use a sharpie or some tape to mark the depth of the trim on the blade so that you know when to stop and don't remove more adhesive than required. Use a hoover to suck out the loose adhesive before checking that your trim will sit flush all the way along the tiles, repeat the cutting if necessary. Spread fresh tile adhesive all along the cleaned up edge and push the trim in. Clean all excess adhesive and re-grout if needed. Be gentle with the multi tool though.
