Adhesive advise

hello my name is paul and have tiled almost all my bathroom using unibond. I've told that this is an inferior product and tiles will come down in due course. What a ***** to be told this. In any case if and when this happens will my only redress be to start again. what an expensive and arduous nighmare of a job which may involve replastering.Does anyone have any positive views on these diy products. Surely these products Couldnt be so inferior sold on the mass market. Has anyone any remedies. I tiled onto a painted wall and plasterboard on the other side. i have yet to finish over the bath. What i notice here is the bath's feet are not fixed directly to the plywood floor. I removed the old Silicon from the back and sides. This old Silicon was removed and i had to use a sealant remover. Great big wodges of this stuff had been put around the bath sides to fill the inch gap. I would greatly appreciate some straightforward advise as this tiling job is becoming the mother of all problems!

DIY adhesives are naff, but once they have been used only time will tell wether they will be alright.

Things to remember for any further DIY projects.

Don't tile straight over a painted wall, always sand down to create as much grab as possible, as the weight of the tiles adhesive and grout is basically just hanging on the strength of the thin layer of paint stuck to the walls.

Depending on tile type and size, either decent tubbed adhesive from a propper tile shop or bagged cement based adhesive for the heavier types of tile.
If it's a good tile shop, like a nation wide type they should be able to supply youwith the right adhesives for the tile types.

Hello paul and welcome....

Nahh i don't think your tiles will fall off...

It's just that we prefer to use trade products that we know will suffice for the guarantee's that we put on jobs...not saying unibond will not last , just that us pro's like to use products we know work and can rely on...

As long as you follow bs5385 fixing guides and allow plenty drying t imes before grouting you should be ok....

Just a couple questions paul please..

Was it tubbed(ready mixed) adhesive or bagged powder and what size tiles have you used..?

:welcome: to the forum :guitarist: Diy stuff ain't great but should "do wot it sez on the tin" as long as you followed the instructions.

:welcome: to the forum & stick far far away from the Dark Side ( B&Q and their Unibond crap)

Thanks guys and especially to those who went against their own judgements! To dave. The tiles uses were 12 in by 8 in approx. and no i didnt sand down the walls before doing the job. i used the tubbed variety for convenience and also was told by a tile shop that the bagged variety does nt last long once opened. Another more reputable tile shop said it should last for up to a year if kept cool and dry. u see i can only do this job on a sat. one question re grouting. will the bagged kind last for how long once opened. Thanks

What they mean when they say opened is probably open time in the bucket when it's mixed.

Can't see them telling you that it don't last long once the bag has been opened cos all of us on here probably keep old bags of adhesive on the back of the van for months, if we threw away all the stuff we never used on a particular job we would be throwing away a fortune.

It sounds like you may get probs with this in the future and what concerns me is this 1" gap between the wall and the bath and the fact that the feet are not attached to the floor properly. It sounds like your your bath needs to be fixed in properly before you consider going any further, it is fairly normal to have a tiny gap which is then sometimes filled with mastic as a way of sealing the water and to also hold the bath to the wall (even if brackets have been used underneath the bath).

Not sure if you will get problems with the adhesive you used only time will tell but just to give you an idea if i turned up at a customers house and they wanted me to use it i wouldn't do the job. It's DIY stuff designed for people who don't know any better so they can rip you off!!! We all use our preffered brands, me personally i am BAL all the way but thats cos i have a massive trust in it.

Others on here will use other brands, but the thing you will notice is whatever brand we use they are all made by highly respected tile or adhesive specialists.

Use a powder grout and make sure it's a flexible grout, leave plenty of time for the tiles to dry before grouting (at least 48 hrs) by the way you dont normally have to leave it that long but cos of the adhesive you used i would give it as long as poss to dry out first.

Ps please make sure that the grout you buy is either BAL, WEBBER, ARDEX or any of the other names that no doubt others on here will suggest.

Good luck
