more a question than advice but if the chip board were removed could you use hardibacker type board instead or will it not support loads in that way??? just that I got to redo my bathroom soon and that is what would be easiest for me to do

Best bet is to remove chipboard replace with wp ply then overlay with 6mm c/s screwed and glued with staggered joints

even if you remove and replace with say 19 mm c/s the joins can cause an issue and need special treatment
