Advice on fixing tiles onto mixed tile and screed floor!

Hi all just been to quote on a floor job 40m2 porcelain in opus pattern running through a kitchen into a hallway and wc and utility. the kitchen is having a extension so will have a new screed in the extension and the utility is a extension with a new screed. The builder has recommend leaving the existing kitchen tiles down (they look like terracotta?) and they have put in a screeds to match the hight of the existing tiles. apart from a couple of the outlying tiles the rest seem solid. would you recommend tiling on top of these (the easy option) if so do I need to prime? or would it be best to remove tiles and screed all? the customer wants whatever I think is best. opinions please!! :smilewinkgrin:

I always remove existing tiles if I possibly can. Sounds like you've got one of those very rare customers who will actually listen to advise even when it could cost them more!

See the thread started yesterday from a lady who had EXACTLY the same scenario as this, except travertine tiles. Cracks all over the place old boy!

terocotta could have many differnt seals you dont know.you could not guarantee that you could stick to it take it up

Never tile on top, never listen to whatever the builder says. If you end up doing it make sure you grind it first. Since in London I've been asked to tile on top of plywood, tiles, wire mash, green board, etc
