Advice on taking up ceramic tiles

Hello.

Am new to tilersforums because the wife wants a new floor in the kitchen. I have set about taking up the old tiles, but the are shattering into a million shards. Once they are up I am left with the old grout/adhesive which is a nightmare to remove. Do I need to remove it inch by inch or can self levelling compound be used to fill in all the gaps.

The property was built in 2002, and the floor is concrete underneath.

Hi Mark once all the tile is up scrape off as much of the loose adhesive as possible, then a self levelling compound can be poured over the whole floor to give you a good surface to retile on.

Thanks Smurf.... When you say scrape off as much loose adhesive. There is no loose, I am using a hammer and bolster to smash it all off, is this necessary ??

No if the addy is solid leave it down and self level over the lot..

use a bolster and hammer yo get most of it off if its really bad use a grinder to get the adhesive off.
