Advice On Travertine

giving my friend some advice on travertine tiles he's going to have a go at laying he's own other than the basics ie keeping them clean whilst Laying brushing down back of tile before sticking and also completely drying the cuts before laying is there any other advice I can give him !??oh and seal before grout and after have I coverd everything !?

unless trav is polished or honed I'd seal after grouting and not before, this way the grout will grab into the pits and hollows and fill them without a sealer creating a barrier. Also back-skim and fill tiles.

I tend to butter all my jobs I think it's a neater finish and in the long run quicker as ur clean laying as u go along lees cleaning after I also think tiles key better to the adhesive when buttered what's your thoughts!?

Trowel floor or walls then skim the back of the tile to give better adhesion and fills any holes in back of tile, which also helps stop holes appearing on face of tile over time

Cool stuff my first travertine job which is in my media pics came out sweet ! I noticed a haze on the back of tile so I brushed over that and the applied adhesive to tile there was a couple of tiles that didn't set as well but I think that was due to not being dried enough when cut on the wet saw so I took them of cleaned back of tile dried then reapplied and was ok ! hopefully my pal gets on ok other wise it will be a swift call to me and for me to make amends

Just u noticed on the cut tiles they didn't stick great only on a couple I assumed it's where they wasn't dry after cutting!??

I've just done my first travertine job and cut it dry on my d24000, it didn't make that much dust and cut perfectly. Reason I done dry was because I was advised to by a few local tilers although the internet says wet cutting is a must - maybe this is just more so for very built up areas?

What do you mean "for built up areas" are u talking about cities? Haha

I think he means he's read a lot online about using wet for areas that it is going to cause a lot of dust in, so built up areas, ie cities.

But he was advised to use dry, because it's better.
