Advice Please

Hi All,

Just back from the NETT course and straight into first job next week. Was looking for the OK from you experienced guys with regards to materials etc.

Its a 3mtr x 3.5 mtr T&G floor with 30cm x 30cm ceramic tiles.

Going to use 12mm external ply to sheet over. Then prime with Bal APD.
Adhesive I'm looking at is Bal gold star with admix AD1 and grout is again Bal wide joint grout with admix GT1.Using a 10mm solid bed trowel.

Does this look ok or am I missing something?
Does the admix products make a huge difference or is it overkill?

I always use either a two part flexible floor tile adhesive or Granfix have recently brought out a single part version with the polymer already in it. I rarely use Bal as it is rather expensive down here as for adding ad1 to the grout for flexibility that's fine although you could also use Mapei which is flexible. Prime the floor and screw down every 20cm don't nail some people have made that mistake and had to go back and relay the floor. anything else i can help with just get in touch,all the best Mike

I dont use ply anymore. Not because i think its not good but for the fact that it adds an extra height to the floor. You are using 12mm, i personally would use 18mm. i would use a 6mm Hardibacker or NO more Ply type cement board to overlay the floor. As said in the previous posts a single part flexible adhesive with the polymer additive already in. Most adhesive manufacturers have the same type product now and every tiler will have their prefrences as to what they use.
There is more than one way to do any job, only time will tell you what way you prefer. Try the ply if you like and then give the cement board a try too.

It will be cheaper just to use a flexi set adhesive and flexible grout rather than using admixes...... not saying that admixes won,t work just tryin to save you pennys.....unless you already have these admixes then no probs....

Unless 18mm plywood or 10mm cement based backer board is used,any adhesive other than two part has no guarantee whatsoever, when tiling onto T&G........Gaz

Thanks for the quick reply guys,

18mm ply with a flexi set adhesive and flexible grout it is then!

Haven't bought anything yet Dave (not before running it by you guys).I Ran the through the product finder tool on Bal website and it came up with the admix products. Thought there might be a better option.

admix in the adhesive is the better spec than spf ,rapid is the best thing on plywood rather than slow set gaz is right you want more than 12mm or 10mm backer board is the best bet nowdays you save the extra cost in labour imo ete
