Advice pls on substrate prep.

Just been to look at a job, new build. the kitchen is on the 1st floor and owner wants to tile. The floor is chipboard but one I've not seen before as I've not had anything to do with new build for some time. It's grey and appears slightly waxy in its appearance. The floor is bounce free and very solid.

I was thinking a 6mm tile backer board screwed down to the chip with maybe rapidflex inbetween???

Anybody got any better solutions?

Is this chipboard from B&Q by anychance. It is just that if it is what I think it is I don't think it is even suitable for tiling onto.........22mm painted chipboard - grey paint both sides - the stuff I was looking at the other evening was poor as I just scratched the paint with my key fob and it flaked off........ I bought WPB instead.

Don't know tbh. the owner wasn't sure what it was either but it's a small plot with 3 houses, all insulation and the like was from B&Q I noticed so maybe.

if the floors got no deflection at all then theres reason to overboard, I would go ahead as planned

backer boards or ply depending on customer costs will be ok if there is no deflection

the chipboard flooring used is water proof one the floor would av been but down as the first lift was built

Cheers for that all, I'll give them backerboard and ply costings let them decide.

Yes it is on joists BTW. the overboarding was only because I'd normally use Ditramat and Rapidset SPF on chip but with the waxy waterproof finish I doubt the adhesion would be enough?

sounds like weyrock . deffo over lay with backer board or ply. backer board would be my choice

Yes, just looked at the weyroc catalogue and it does indeed look like the same stuff.

Just screw the backerboard/ply down? surely gluing it also will have little effect unless it sticks to the grey surface? (which I doubt but happy to be proved wrong)

Yes, I think so. going past the site today so I'm gonna call in and see the builder and ask.

when I've tiled onto it before, I use hardibacker bedded on a single part flexi adhesive and screwed. Had no problems that I'm aware of

NoMore Ply glue and screws. The glue will stick no problem
