Hi, This is my first post I have been a member for a while but have spent the time learning by reading other posts on the site. Now I am a bit confused!

I am about to tile my 1st floor bathroom walls & floors for the first time.

The floor had vinyl sheet stuck down onto 3mm hardboard panels. When I removed. I found these 22mm planed timber floorboards as shown below

p1342100509d.jpg

The gaps between each floorboard is approx 3mm and I have securely screwed them into the joist at 400mmm centres.

1) I was toying with the idea of using hardie-backer which I understand is fixed with tile adhesive but with these gaps between the floorboards should I lay hardboard again to cover the gaps first?

Alternatively, would it be okay to lay plywood directly over these floorboards asis or again should I fit hardboard panels first to cover the gaps?

2) Whichever option I choose I intend to tile the walls before tiling the floors and will be tiling floor to ceiling with no skirting board. Should I fit the overlay on the floor before or after tiling the walls?

Also off topic a bit but I wanted to ask do 2mm ivory grout lines go well with 400mm x 250mm white wall tiles. The wife wants to do this but never having seen this myself I have reservations???

Many thanks.

All of what you're suggesting is in theory ok. Personally I'd ply the floor with 12mm to 18mm ply depending how sound the current boards are. Screw down well.

Up to you if you overlay floor before doing walls. Just bare in mind thickness of ply, tiles and addy when setting out so you still get good cuts into the floor once its tiled.

If this is your first time tiling personally I'd use 3 mm grout lines with this size of tile - Think you'll find it a bit more forgiving. As for grout colour... well not my cup of tea but that one's def down to you and the missus!!!

As long as the boards are secure then hardi 250 will be fine....

I would board the floor before you do the walls...

Mapei say you can use thier adhesives with 6mm hardi , so no worries there as long as the floor is solid...

Keraquick would be my choice for the floor and mapei p9 for the walls...

Thank you all for the responses I really appreciate it.

I have decided to go with the 12mm plywood overboard option! I have screwed into the joists and the floor feels very solid. So I feel safe.

I intend to tile the walls before overboarding the floor as I feel that it will be neater. But I am a little unclear when you say "good cuts". From my understanding I should tile the wall leaving a 4mm expansion gap all around it floor to ceiling meaning there will be a 4mm expansion gap between the bottom row of tiles and the current floorboards. Once I have overboarded with 12mm ply (this time with a 4mm gap from the wall tiles), added tiles (9mm) bedded into adhesive (~3mm) then the floor will have been raised by 24mm. 18mm above where I have made any cuts so they wouldn't be seen be they good or otherwise.

Have I misunderstood the procedure?

Also I want to use Aluminium Square Edged Tile Trim Around the window and tiled bath panel. The tiles are 400mm x 250mm x 9mm which I will be applying with a 10mm square notched trowel.

1) Should I get the 10mm tile trim and apply the adhesive to the wall first then gently push the trim into the adhesive, reapply a little more adhesive on top of the trim so that the 9mm tiles fit flush?

2) Or should I get the 12mm trim and pin to wall then apply the adhesive on top with a base to make 9mm tiles sit flush? How would I guarantee a 3mm base consistent along the entire wall???

What do the pros do???

Should also say I had a chance to see an example of white tiles with an ivory grout wasn't bad, wasn't my cup of tea either.

Told the missus as such :incazzato: what a showdown that was  but surprise surprise I won :yikes: and the ivory grout is out!

Gonna go with a white wall grout instead with regular cleaning (me not her that's how I won :mad2:) and this Super Protector For Wall and Floor Grout to help the grout keep its colour.

A friend recommended it anyone else have any good experiences with it?

 My bad I have stated the wrong tile depths! :yikes:
The floor tiles are 9mm but the wall tiles are actually 6mm so I should have asked is it better to get 6mm tile trim or 8mm tile trim.
Sorry for the inconvenience. The question about how the pros fit square edged tile trim still applies though!
