Just been to look a bathroom floor for a customer, she couldn't explain on the phone the problem suggesting it would be better to see it.She was asking if it would be possible to save it,How bad could it be I thought? Before I set eyes on it she told me the whole bathroom had been retiled about 2 years ago when a new suite was put in, the plumber got a friend of a friend's son to tile.

No tiles were removed all tile on tile. The walls have lasted but the floor is a different story. Nearly all tiles have failed, cracked ,lifted, grout cracked and missing.I took a panel off of the vanity unit to discover the "tiler" has left the original floor tiles 100x100mm gloss white, down covered with slc, and tiled on top.The original white are directly onto the chipboard no hardie in sight. I could lift the slc with my fingers.

After explaining why the floor had failed, the customer told me while it was being done she enquired with the tiler didn't remove the existing tiles ,to be told it was too much like hard work :mad2:.

Now she will have to pay again to have it done properly chipboard removed etc she's not a happy bunny.
How do these "tilers" get the work????? Must be price !!!!!!!

to be honest mark sounds like a customer looking for the cheapest route and shes got it.

shes asked you to see if you can save the floor..suggesting she doesnt want it removed and also has let some one tile on tile in her 1st install again suggesting she is the one chasing cheap prices...

And after this she didn't at least raise an eyebrow??

From what you've said it's clearly price. Dare i say it, serves her right. In the nicest possible way. Had she got a few quotes rather than relying on a friend of a friend, of the mate next door but ones son to do it. Then i'm sure one of 3 or 4 tilers called out to quote would suggest and explain why it's essential to lift the previous work. Startingh with the line, "well if you don't in about 18 months to 2 years the floor will fail and then blah blah blah.

Agree John, but i decent tiler wouldn't of done the job as discribed either prehaps.

But ceraintly if i had a floor fail, even a few years down the line i'll expect to be called back. My desire for good practice and a good name would see me doing everything to rectify.
