hi all. does anyone know if theres any government funded tiling courses out there as surprise surprise i've just been made redundent. i was hoping to pay for my own course but any money i've saved has got to go to paying the bills and since i've ploughed a lot of my hard earned dosh into the system i think it's only fair i get a bit back. any advice or help would be most grateful. i do quite a bit of plastering part time and i would like the tiling to add to this and hopefuly make a go at working for myself.
cheers all

I doubt it very much stu. i was in the same position as you a couple of months back and was looking into similar things through the job centre but was told i had to be claiming job seekers allowance for 6 months before i got any help. so i'd be surprised if you get any help. Why don't you see if there is a tiler in your area that you could go and help for a couple of weeks unpaid cause i have done a tiling and although it was very good when i finnished it i went out with my tiler mate and learned more in that enviroment. Also a tiler could prob use your plastering skills for a couple of weeks. good luck

get in contact with you local business gateway,if your under 25 it's quite easy for them to sort out grants for you or if you have been unemployed for 6 months, over 25's can still get grants from local authorities or other places some with no or very little interest charges but they would be the best place to source something like that, they will also help you with business plans and show you how to sort out your tax and are totally free!

Fair play dave. But it was meant as a dig at the gov that was relative to the thread not immigrants. I was only trying to point out that it's frustrating for guys like me and stu and of course many others that when you are desperate to better yourself to get back to work and the 1 time you hesitantly ask for help it isn't there. Anyway lesson learned.

Cheers

Remember that any money you spend on yourself (courses/training)is an investment in you, don't worry what other guys are doing just make sure that what you do is the right way

you can also claim most of the money spent on courses if not all of it back in your tax return!:hurray:

cheers for your ideas . i'm gonn have to look at my options as what i didn't mention in my post is that at the time they made me redundent i am currently on sick leave after a nasty argument with a ten pound lump hammer and a double glazed window.
one minute i was at work, hour later i was lying on an operating table having my tendons sown back together wearing a very draughty gown!:yikes:
