Anyone do plastering as well as tiling

Hi all going to book a 5 day plastering course up .Only due to the fact i think from what i have read on these fantastic forums a lot of answers are get a plasterer in to level walls etc.If you ever tried to get one to do a job for you you hope they going to do it properly.also if you need to put new dryling up or skim walls you got the know how.In your opinions would this be a good thing to do,as you are keeping all the work and profits your way.To be honest thats the name of the game profits and reference

I can do any prep work ready for me to tile but if the finish is to be a paint finish then i get a plasterer in!!!..

It is a great add on any tile fixer could have , being able to fully prep there own walls on jobs....

Did a 5 day course myself and it was well worth it! Started to labour for a friend of mine who`s been doing it years and picked up loads of tips and practice and now quite comfortable skimming walls and ceilings! Done a few solely plastering jobs as well

i can gtee 100 percent that you will not learn plastering from a dvd alone.

if you cant get a start with a spread then do a course but do a good course but go to a reputable place because like everything else in life there is good and bad. as i have stated many many times before, i will give anybody on here advice regarding plastering, i am sure the same goes for mark dev, floydy and any other plasterer who receives tiling advice on here. personally if you are going to do a cousre, then id say goldtrowel or kenny at diamond because he seems to have a good set up down their by all accounts

bit of both really, dave from uk spreads dvds are very good with lots of useful tips. still nothing beats hands on. bear in mind short courses will be onto lovely smooth plasterboard. you'll learn a lot quicker getting stuck in with a proper spread. crap walls, patching, d and d all in real life situations. ring around and volunteer your services for a day here and there. very rewarding job. if you cant get to help someone do the short course then volunteer to do all the jobs for family that are available.

I got a DVD from ebay..........it was a bit basic, more of a promo dvd really............but I watched it a couple of times..........then went out and bought my multifinish stuff............and plastered my utility room.

Ok.........when its painted, then the little blips and trowel marks will show......but hey ho.

Have started taking on more rip out and replaster jobs..........I make sure I tell the customer that I am NOT a plasterer, but can plaster good enuff to tile onto

like floydy and ed i'm a plasterer before tiler ( or was ), dvd's can show you how to do it but you would be far better doin a course and afterwards go with a spread for the odd day here and there, a dvd can't give you the feel, it can't tell you what you've done wrong and how to correct it, etc.
one little thing that you would or should learn on the course that will make life easier for a good finish is the set up of your trowel..ie, corners, edges and curve across the blade...Mark.

Which way you are ever going to learn how to plaster; doing the plaster by your own has this advantage:
- A pro plasterer has to obey tolerances for the wall eveness.
- But these tolerances often don´t match the eveness you realy need like e.g. setting large format wall tiles - there the wall realy needs to be even and if you´re able to correct it by plastering it to a grade you need it is your advantage.
