i have to disagree old chap
i wouldnt swop my lazer for a gold clock

i ran a datum around large office block last week
reset 4 times and it was spot on
now with a 50ft w/l you wouldnt be so lucky

wouldnt be without mine, started off with 1 30 yrs ago at the start of my apprenticeship, and i guarantee you my line with a W/L will be as accurate if not more accurate than a laser level.Funny thing though, relating to this thread,it was an old portugese tiler that i served my time with

pjtiler, run my water level around as many times as you like and it will always be 100% spot on,no good having the tools if ya aint got the knowledge to use them properly, and to use a water level proficiently takes a lot of learning. But thats only for us OLD TIMERS :hurray::hurray::hurray:

no one is saying the old w/l has no place in the modern tiling industry in fact i still use the one i was given as an apprentice some 46 years ago
my point is the lazer is equally as accurate ,easier to use and quicker eshsperly on large projects were one man can put a datum round without help from anyone

The Potugese guys working round my way are amazing, they have a wide enough skill base to build a house and do all the services and surfaces. Also they work there backsides off and are a good laugh.

Makes a change to have people praising european workers, some more of you should give it a try!

I've heard of water levels but only recently.

What a simple idea!

Having said that, any plumbing or heating engineer can tell you that you may experience difficulties if one end of the level is near a heat source......

I'm not a time served plumber but I understand that they revisit an O level physics experiment with a u shaped glass tube.

1) Fill a U with water
2) Mark the levels with both ends at ambient temperature.
3) Put a heat source, Bunsen Burner or Torch at one side only
4) See the levels change.

How?

Water expands when heat is applied and its temperature changes. So the levels on both sides will rise.

However the side that is getting the most heat will expand and hence will rise the most.

BTW first post in the Arms - Hi everyone :)

I suppose that might pose a problem if one side was near a heat source or in the sun and the other in the shade for some length of time, but usually that tool is used fairly quickly and then you move on to the rest of the job.
It is a very accurate tool and handy to have in particular if you have many walls that have to tie together.
Lasers do not have the ability to go around corners, but they are really cool.
