Anyone tiled over garden decking ?

Hi All,

Just had a customer on the phone who wants to tile over the existing decking outside her patio doors, can you do it / anyone done it before ?

Is it a case of treating the decking like any wooden sub floor ie: mechanically fixing cement (not ply as its outside) board over the top to create a stable subfloor, then off you go with your frost proof adhesive and tiles?

Going to have a look at the weekend so any info much appreciated.,

Presumably Marmox type boards would be suitable as an over-board as they're waterproof. However I'd be more concerned about the timber 'structure' supporting the whole thing. EG the decking could have been fixed to uprights just banged into the ground and these could move/twist/rot.

Hardie cannot be used outside. I think it is something to do with frost. I had a job to price earlier in the year similar, i called HB tech then.
There's no way i'd be tiling over the decking. Most deckboards have a fair bit of give in them, and are softer than floorboards, and decking doesn't have a T and G design.
How high is the decking? I'd be looking to get the decking boards off and take a look at the frame and structure first. If weathered or looking a bit poor remove. If firm and sound i'd look at maybe a double skin of 18mm ply laid adjacent to each other. Maybe a layer of marmox and a waterproof coating before tiling? Also depends how you are finishing the sides, are they to be tiled or cladding?

i would not tile over any wood outside ,concrete base or screed over type one

I'd be removing the section that she wants tiling and putting a concrete pad in it's place, if you did that soon it would be cured for tiling in spring.

Thanks for the replies fellas, looks like the general consensus is to give this one a wide berth. Could be more trouble than it's worth.

I'll go and have a look anyway and report back.
