Can I just ask what everyone prefers when making shower cubicle walls waterproof/water resistant. I am retiling my father in laws shower and will probably need to replace the plasterboard. I'm in 2 minds as using aquapanel seems a lot less work but is it as efficent as going down the plasterboard and tanking route. Also what does eveyone consider to be the best tanking system to use.

Aqua type panels are water resistant or water proof depending on make....the cement type are only water resistant and the cement fibre faced boards have a water proof poly core....

These types of boards will carry more weight per sqr mtr compared to plaster board....thats the best advantage over plasterboarding and tanking...IMO...

Usually these boards will need all joints to be waterproofed as well..usually a water proof tape is used...they are designed to withstand water ingression from breaking them down but not fully water proof unless they are like the wedi type boards with taped joints..

Personally unless i need the added weight gains from aqua type boards then i use 12.5mm plaster board and a tanking membrane.....thats is the best option IMO...for a water tight wall installation..

Cost wise then pb is your option with a tanking kit, by the time you have got the backer boards, tape, fixings it mounts up.

Tankig kits vary......many use gums or resins you paint on they are easy but if they fail you have to prove they were installed to the letter of manufacturers instructions. The no messing ultra safe solution has to be a physical membrane like dura-wp applied with flexible tile adhesive there is no messing about or drying time involved.

People may say I am bias because of wetdecs but we choose not to sell paint on membranes in favour of physical ones because we know they work without comeback which is what you guys need............

hope this helps
