back buttering tiles question

Is this necessary for slate tiles 30cm square layed on to ditra using keraquick I would rather avoid this if possible as I might mess up the front surface with adhesive when positioning the tiles.

I would IMHO just to make sure you get 100% coverage.

Deffo Slate can be flakey/ dusty on the back.

YES!!! 100% all of the time , especially with stone... and make the backs are clean from slurry which can be present with slate tiles.

Always back butter floor tiles. Phil makes an excellent point about the dust, a wipe with a damp sponge before back skimming may also be necessary.

Just get a bucket of water and a sponge and clean them as you get any on the face

Thanks to everybody for the replies. Yes, we did wash the calibrated tiles as they were covered in fine dust. I saw a video on youtube whereby tests were carried out on the difference between back buttering or leaving it out, and that convinced me that it was the way to go.
