Back buttering

Heard this mentioned a few times on here and am just curious as to how it is done.

Meaning is the adhesive applied to the back of the tile the same way it is applied to the wall (Ridged) or is it applied flat if you get what i mean and when would you considering doing this, when the walls are out and if the tiles are over a certain size?

Generally you want to be spreading your adhesive on the floor / wall but if you find a tile isn't touching the adhesive well due to the wall / floor being a bit rough or whatever then you might 'butter' a few tiles to ensure they have a little more adhesive on them to keep them fixed well and flush with the tiles around it.

Sometimes you may use a translucent tile such as a frosty white marbe and then you'd also be using a white adhesive to ensure you can't see the trowel marks under through the tile in areas, and you'd also consider 'buttering' the back of them to make sure air pockets can't be seen too.

Maybe a dodgy to reach area behind some pipes under a sink would just be impossible to get at and trowel out so if you haven't got a decent small troel or quaging trowel that's got cut-outs in (forget the name) then you'd consider buttering the tiles in that area too.

I'd never butter a whole floor / wall, it's a step above spot-fixing and will just cost you in grout.

spot on Dan...good points..also consider some tiles are ridged on the back for a key......skimming adhesive over the back and filling the hollows then allows your tile to bed into the adhesive you have applied to wall or floor.Adhesive to adhesive contact is always very good and strong.....Gaz

Just done the odd few tiling jobs for myself and family and never heard of that saying before, was just curious.

It's a pleasure....sorry you had to pack up snooker,and resort to tiling...lol
