Backer board onto brick/block/ float and skim.

Hi, what are all the options to consider for fixing a backerboard to the following.

A plain brick or block wall.
A solid wall with backing coat and finish.

I know putting up a stud would be acceptable.
And applying the backer board directly to a brick/block wall a flxible adhesive, and screwing with washers into the wall.

Some more options would be appreciated. Thanks.

Render it with mud (sand/cement/lime or bagged stuff such as ardex etc) - perfectly flat & plumb. Or strap with timber and fix cement board/plaster board etc to the strapping.
