Went down to the tip today to get rid of some rubbish. It's one of those that are operated by a 3rd party on behalf of the council.

They sort through all the rubbish and put anything half decent out for sale.

I got

Nearly new ss mosaic trowel
3 new g clamps (small)
Pair of tin snips
Bradawl
Carpenters pencil (I only took it caus I've lost mine!)

All for £1

Well, after the week I've had it cheared me up

I've had a few bargains from there in the past.

I used to salvage items my employer through out. I was widely known for rescuing items from the skip. I rescued things like Dexion Shelving, racking systems, filing cabinets, adhesives etc. I once found two of those spiral binders. My wife needed one and I sold the other for £50.

Building sites can yield rich pickings. Last week I saw a statistic that claimed that some 13% of materials delivered to site goes straight into the skip. A few years ago some contractors were refurbishing some public toilets. I found around 30 unused roofing slates (real slate, not cement fibre) in perfect condition just binned. There were more in the skip but I physically couldn't get to them.

About 3 years ago I managed to aquire a large number of tiles from a specialist kitchen and bathroom shop that was closing down. He reduced all his stocked tiles but put out tiles that he only had the odd box of for people to help themselves for a donation to the air ambulance. He had loads of really nice Fired Earth type 4 inch tiles, but only a box or two of any one colour. So I did a kitchen splashback in a property we renovated in some of them. There were around 4 colours and we made up a pattern. We had just enough tiles.

When you live in Cornwall you learn to make do. The Cornish have been at it for centuries and I guess it's rubbing off on me:grin:

emptied my work trousers for wash and found a million carpenters pencils in various pockets, on friday I couldn't find one! Was working in barrow in furness afew years ago, skip out front of job, never had to get it emptied, locals did it for us. You're not from b-i-f are you cc?

No I'm not from BIF.

Another story, My children were tasked with cleaning out their rooms a few months ago. My youngest is especially wasteful, which annoys me intensly! She simply through out a box of pens, pencils etc. I rescued it an secreted it elsewhere in the house. Now, if anyone needs a pen or a pencil I take great pleasure in supplying them exactly what they need without having to go down to the shops!

It may not surprise you that I pinch working taps from bathroom suites that I take out. These get put into a box. I produce them when I have a client who needs a new tap or two but can't afford one, or who may be planning to change their bathroom in the near future. I charge the client for fitting the taps but supply them the taps FOC.
