Please could someone let me know if I would need to tank my bathroom floor. The sub floor is pine tongue and groove. If I lay 18mm plywood on top of the sub floor and then tile with flexible adhesive. Would I need to tank the floor?

I may also install electric underfloor heating. Any advice would be greatly appreciated?

hi Boardrider

if you're intending on using the bathroom as a wetroom or know that it will be subjected to a lot of water, then tanking the floor as well as the walls will be a very good idea.

speak to Wetdecs, one of the forums sponsors, as they know a thing or two about wetrooms and tanking

oh and :welcome:

Hi GirlRacerRed thanks for the welcome! the room is my downstairs shower room with a normal shower tray. The floor will hopefully not get too wet but you never know.... Thanks for the advice I will speak to wetdecs.
No need to tank, waste of time and money if you have a properly installed and sealed shower enclosure. More so with it being downstairs. Screw the ply down at 150mm centres (avoiding water pipes) flexible adhesive and grout should do the rest.

The most regular failure I come across is in the foot of the wall plate. You MUST Silicon inside this before you fit the enclosure or water can run inside the wall plate and will leak out at the back of the joint with the tiles. Most enclosures will not tell you to do this. Mistake.

Hi Thanks for all the advice, just to clarify that I do have a shower enclosure to install in the downstairs toilet shower room. I will probably tank the shower enclosure with wetdecs dura-wp product and use sealux trim between the shower tray and the wall tanking.

Is no more ply the way to go? could this be used as a base for the 1200 x 900mm shower tray?

Your going over board with this, if you really need to tank then use Dura-wp on the walls, the floor needs over boarding as your tiling it.

2 options 10mm ply or a cement board on floor............tanking the floor not worth it your base is the collection point................... Cement board is best on the floor in this case but dont be swayed by pretty pictures, they have them in your local DIY / Tile store.....................
