bitumen flooring

Hi all,
Used to be a tiler many eons ago, however, just moved into an 18th century house with bitumen flooring. At the moment I am redoing the downstairs shower room which was basically disintegrating. I have never tiled on bitumen before, any advice on cleaning, sealing or anything else would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the swift reply, I was trying to get a correct answer on Only Connect and failed. The bitumen layer is approx. 2 mm thick but absolutely rigid. The previous floor tiles came off easily but not a surprise considering the addy coverage, some fixed with Silicon behind the toilet. I need to put down flexi-leveller before tiling, then tanking, as hoping to create a semi-wetroom (which I have done before).

Try a slurry coat of SBR and single part flexible floor adhesive

Would you use the sbr neat? Have a similar issue coming up soon need to self-level floor and ditra it. Would you put slurry down first then s/l then ditra? Ps sorry to op for hijacking thread .

50/50 sbr/spf mix . If you want to level floor after then you can or tile over.

Am doing one at the moment where bitumen is 15mm thick.
I use weber gear so I rang technical. This is what they said:

If Interior flooring grade bitumen then:
prime 5:1 PR360
Lay with a 2 part eg Weber set(or rapid) plus with AD250

Just to add that weber said if i was to level with SLC it would have to be 25mm minimum on top of a barrier membrane.

Because I can't lower the drainage any lower the SLC will probably be about that depth (more expense!).
