Bloody adhesive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello again.

Just started a bathroom refurb today.All white goods out, fittings off, capped pipes off, tiles hacked down and tomorrow scraping old adhesive 20m2 from solid wall.

What would be your method to make the job easier. Normally wet the adh...e with warm water and scraper.
Heard that vinegar makes it easier, never tried steamer but a lot of people sugested it.Adhesive was ready mixed crap but solid after 5 years being on the wall.

Try to get the adhesive as saturated as you can, soak it then soak it again then try to scrape off!

Hammer and bolster, scaper on the easier gear, or overboard the lot lol, the time it will save and the sore knuckles, ouch.

A steamer will work but depends on the substrate. It can do more damage.

Easiest thing is get a labourer to do it ....not that i'd do that of course!

I soak it using hot water leave for a bit, then soak it again, and leave for a bit longer, then it should go softish, then just scrape off.

So no easy way than..................

By the way ,had labourer for a day,warm water sprayed on adhesive and scrapers all off in less than 4 hours :drool5:
Labourer cost me 70 quid for a shift but money well spend will use guy again as very good worker.

You could have just primed it an got one coat plaster cheap as chips works a treat over old adhesive

New tiles are 400x600 porcelain so i dont think that skimming over an old paste adhesive would be a good idea as said took 4 hours and all done.
I always like the famous "prepare or prepare to fail"

Didnt say I ve paid £70 for 4 hours,it took 4 hours 2 of us to get it of the wall labourer was well used for all day.But if I took him just to clean the adhesive still will pay full day rate.What would you expect?

iv a cup grinding disk for removing stuff like this. works great but very dusty. great for removing lumps or high spots on floors etc

Tubbed adhesive, less than 5 years since install on a brick, render and skim wall?

I need to come work for you Luke. I've never used anything other than a blade scrapper. It is tubbed adhesive after all.

Is this the same job you posted about a couple of days ago?

I'll happily spend my days scraping old adhesive off skimmed walls for £70.00.

Think of the money i would save by not advertising, maintaining and replacing tools, fuel, insurance, liability cover, website hosting, business cards, etc etc

£140 for an 8 hour day. I would go for that if it was just scraping off addy 5 days a week. Might get bored but at least it would pay the bills and I would be able to sell off the tools and get just a scraper or 2.
