Boxing in pipework

What material is the best to use for boxing in pipework and then tiling straight on to? (Ceramic tiles)

Plasterboard or tile backer board, not ply or Mdf !

why not ply our last job was ply and it was ok

If its in a bathroom/shower room then it's too sensitive to temperature change,
It will work out a lot cheaper using a sheet of plasterboard to a sheet of ply.
