Discuss Can I apply Sealguard on top of HG? HELP in the British & UK Tiling Forum area at TilersForums.com.

Utility room has been sealed with 2 coats of HG impregnator/sealer which has left a satin finish and slight enhanced colour on slighly tumbled limestone. Still have 20 sq. metres of kitchen to do. Friend has done the same but tiles have become dirty with contractor traffic and now very difficult to clean. His supplier has now recommended using Sealguard (claims it's better). I've done a sample of HG versus Sealguard on spare tile - 2 coats each. Have put water on which tends to spread slightly on the HG but stays in tight globules on the Sealguard so Sealguard looks better at repelling water. However, done the same with red wine for 20 minutes. On wiping off, HG stain free but Sealguard side shows grey stain. Sealguard makes no difference to colour or finish. Have also tried sample of applying Sealguard on top of HG which reduces the sheen back towards matt finish. However, not sure now how to seal kitchen. I'd like utility and kitchen to have same finish but if I apply HG followed by Sealguard will this impair the sealing capability of either or cause some other reaction/problem in the longer term?

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

Wow - that was quick - thank you. Our tiles are newly laid and clean it's just that 30% already coated with HG. Removing the HG seems labour intensive if the Sealguard can't be applied over the HG. In your opinion, which is the better product?

Also, does this mean that whatever product we use to seal now, we must use the same next time?

Thanks.

Not keen on the aerosol type, prefer a sealer I can see soaking into the stone

I'm not a fan of the Sealguard aerosol. Its very expensive and you dont get as much product into the stone as you do with a liquid sealer, IMO.

Seal guard do a few sealers and not just the aerosol one..

You can strip the old sealer and re-do in another , just you can't add it on top of the hg without removing it..
