hi

just a quick question, just been to see my brother he's moving in to new house im tiling his floors, new floors seem to have a grey waterproof coating on them am i right in thinking i cant tile straight on to this, the thing is i told him he couldnt he got ply from someone but only 6mm i no this is no good, is the only option to go and get minimum 12mm ply.

You can get 6mm Hardie backerboard for floors if height will be an issue. What exactly is the "waterproof" coating, do you know?

Is the floor timber?

just looks like chipboard but it got a grey coating on it, not sure if i can tile on it

It is best not to tile straight onto chipboard if you don't have to. Check out the backerboard form Hardie. Good information regarding fitting is available from their site, or Topps usually have the leaflets.

The grey coating john is waterproofing for when the houses are constructed..the floors go down before the roofs go on for health and saftey reasons..so the coating protects them from the elements.....make sure they are fixed well and overboard as grumpy says with 6mm hardibackers.....
