Can you tile over tile in a shower area?

I am tiling a friends bathroom, he doesn't want me to take the back wall off in the shower cubicle. Is it ok to tile over the existing tiles in a wet area.

If the tiles seem solid and there are no movement cracks in them, i no people who have done this...i just dont, dont ask me why its just me preference. not to add the extra weight your putting on the wall, why make the room smaller lol!

also when it comes to tiling again in the future, there is nothing worse than taking 2 layers of tiles off!.....trust me!

Personally I would'nt, you don't know how the other tiles were fixed. and what is the backing, gypsum, render etc.

hi,it makes a better job removing them and re preparing the wall,i assume the other walla are being removed anyway

The answer to your question is yes but the question you should be asking is will they stay fixed?.... Yes and no, are original tiles solid? What tiles are you tiling over the top with? Ceramics, porcs, stone? Everyone on here will advise remove old tiles including myself, reason we advise this is because we lay 100s meters every year and we need peace of mind knowing what we fix will not have any problems.

You should never tile over tile imo they might seem solid but when you and another layer of tiles there maybe weight issues and alot of tiles in the shower tray or your mates head.

Its for the best Miller, whilst the boards are off, add noggins close to the shower tray, and silicon or better still 'Instastick' down between the tray these. This will really firm up the shower tray and prevent any water niggles.
Then use Marmox boards,(light and easy to cut), the noggins will give you a lovely firm base to screw the Marmox too.
Tape the joints with waterproof tape and off you go tiling.
