Cleaning grout off tiles.

I fitted some tiles that were from B&Q. The tiles are a matt finish and it was a devils own job to clean the grout off. I went over then a number of times and eventually used a tile grout cleaning solution, this improved the situation and they look okay but not exactly as I would have liked them. Any tips on what I could have done better and thus help if I have to fit similar again.
