I check companieshouse.gov.uk to make sure the name hasn't been taken. And I also check the trademark database patent.gov.uk I think it is to make sure it's not a registered trademark. I do a google search and also make sure a small company isn't using it somewhere who might register it as a trademark or with companies house after you've started to advertise the name too.

As it's a local business, I'd try to use an old town name or something that locals know of. Potters Tiling for example for Stoke.

Or as Andy says, your initials or name. Keeps it personal. And Eddie Stobart got big and they still use his name.
