The Legend; Phil Hobson RIP

Hope you guys/gals can help, I have a job to price. Domestic large floor approx 170m2 4 bathrooms fully tiled walls and floor, wet rooms (tanked). Floor de-coupling membrane. A lot of prep work etc. My problem is the customer has not yet picked the tiles, but wants me to submit a day rate. I usually work on a m2 rate, but as they are not sure about the material I can't put a price on it.

I have been highly recomended by a neighbour, they have seen my work. The neighbours job was big and part of it was the vaulted ceiling that won jotm in dec 09. I did most of that job on price, but the vaulted ceiling was day work. At the time I was charging £200.00 per day, but as it was a big job I dropped my rate to £180.00 per day. My question is do you guys/gals think this is to much given the present climate?

I would appreciate any feedback, I'm sure the neighbours have talked about my rates. I don't want to lose this job but would you think £180.00 is on the high side? Any comments? thanks Phil:thumbsup:

It could appear high to some Phil. Mine is usually £170 per day but I find that I dropped it a little over the last year. I think if your customer knows that they are paying for your top notch skills and experience then it should be ok. Make a comparison with a Barrister's daily rate of around £1500 and for that all you get is a load of waffle.

I agree , stick with it.

They have seen your work and know what they are getting, they may also have spoken to the neighbour though and asked what theirs cost.

I cant understand why people want day rate rather than a price on the job or per metre, least they know then what the overall cost will be. I know plenty of people who dont do as much on day rate.

I think if you've got the job based on the neighbours then they'll deffo have already talked about your costs, so the new job customer will be expecting the £180 touch anyway...

If you go higher the new customer will be miffed and if you do it lower the old one will find out and be huffed.....

Stick to your £180 mate:thumbsup:

Going on your reccomendation phil £180, you could try for £200 and put it down to fuel costs, material costs etc, still good money at £180 though, I recently worked for a multi millionare who had seen my work and told me he would pay me a grand a week and I hadnt even mentioned price to him. Who was I to disagree!

Good luck if you can get £180 per day. I do a mix of work as a handyman from small to larger jobs and get quite a lot of small jobs through social services. A lot of it is stuff nobody else will turn out to like putting up a curtain rail, changing a loo seat. I am quite happy to fit these small jobs in around other work.

I work on £15 per hour {minimum 2 hours} within a 10 mile radius for whatever work I do = £120 per day, and they still moan. One women who moved to the area a few years ago from the home counties asked me to reseal round a bath but said she wouldn't pay £15 per hour - That's what I'd expect to pay in London - Fair enough says I and walks away.

What annoys me is the same people wll quite happily pay £60+ to get a washing machine repairman, oil boiler service, pest controller etc just to come over the threshold.

Or putting it another way I will travel up to 10 miles without any extra charge. If they had a taxi for that distance it would cost them £25 and they would probably give a tip as well.

Well that's my easter moan over.
