just lately ive been getting a lot of emails from customers asking for a price on there tiling, they go into great detail on the tiling they want doing, however i allways prefer to look a job before quoting,so email back asking if i can veiw the job first, but i find some of them never contact me again.

do any of you email ball park figures to customers or do you stand firm on veiwing the job first..

havent had this so much lately but I used to get a fair few like it. I always said that I would need to see the job before discussing prices....as you say , They rarely follow it up.

i never give a price over the phone or by e mail if they are serious about the job they would let you go round to measure and give advise imo and they will probrably want about another 20 prices aswell

Same here, there either not that serious, or just another tiler wanting to gauge competitors pricing

Never give a price over the phone or by email if I haven't seen the job. Like you say, more often than not, they don't reply. Time wasters galore at the moment, still have to be polite and professional though.

With the others no pricing over e-mails or the phone, they say we won't hold you to it...they do.

We've done a lot of business by Email. After the initial contact I get them to send photos of the job and enter a dialogue before giving an estimate. This modern technology is great - no petrol costs or wasted hours talking, after agreeing the price if it's local I'd go and confirm, but if it's distance just turn up and do it.

never give price by email or phone for new customers. Only if its long time customer, and when they email me attachments with pictures, drawings and details of tiles they going to use.

We work for 2 firms where we have fixed prices so we accept their work on e-mail, thet know what they're paying us before we do but all other jobs have to be priced visually

You could always throw a cheap but sensible price in and say subject to survey. That would get their interest and get you a viewing to check if the price is ok.

Usually insist on seeing the job but have given the odd builder a "xx for straight forward work" price on the phone to see if they're interested or not.
