Expansion Joint

Going to quote for a 775m2 job on 3 floors of a shop (225m2 per floor at 15mx15m). The architect said that an expansion joint every 6m2 needs to be installed. Tiles are poss 600x600 or 800x800. The base will be solid concrete.

My understanding is an expansion joint is only placed above a joint already in the floor.
If there is no joint in the floor do I need to put an expansion joint in, and if so, is every 6m2 correct?

I've never had a job big enough to put expansion joints in, but i remember from my course, we where told, every 4m centres.

I usually assume every 10m for a pre-formed expansion joint.

You are in Spain so perhaps an increase in expansion joints due to the heat

Hi Scott,

Still a good idea, schluter website have all the joints that you may need....recommended if no joint exists in the substrate that you include at least through the tile and adhesive. Although if you feel up to it, doing it by hand will give you a much longer run, I think most of the preformed ones don't go longer than about 3m? they are not difficult just take a bit of practice......heres 2 I did recently...first one is the bigger one...but spot the second one.

Hi scott movement joints are to be put at floor perimeters and to divide the floor into bays of size not greater than 10m by 10m.(less if theres u floor htg)and if theres movement joints in the bed. and tiling should be sited immediatly over and be continuous with structural movement joints in the base. if the arcitect specifies movement joints every 6m it is for a reason. and be careful its not a anhydrite screed cos the anhydrite screed will have a layer of laitance that will need to be removed after 2-6 days (dependent on brand of screed used)this will provide a dense surface to tile onto and aid drying. good luck
