Expansion joints - Advice on tiling a large area

Tilers Forums Official Sponsors

Having worked for Schluter in the past I think you'll find that they wont say DITRA is an alternative to expansion joints. In theory due to the fact your removing the bond between the tiles and the floor you shouldn't need expansion joints but Schluter will not recommend this as it goes against whats in the Bristish Standards.
With regards to the joints you are looking at putting them somewhere between every 6 - 10m so providing no room is bigger than this then you would only need to have perimeter expansion joints. (a gap under a skirting will do).
With regards to the cracks in the floor, the DITRA will bridge cracks up to three mm so it will be fine without the need for a joint over them.
You should still use joints in doorways.
Schluters tel number is 01530 813396 and ask to speak to Glynn as he's probably the best to speak to.

put your expansion joint around the perimeter of the rooms, you can hide it with timber skirting or tiled skirting, used this method on 4 barn conversions a few years back, it was in the architects spec and although it was the first time i did it i believe it worked fine, trimline do all these expansion joints
