expansion joints and when should i use them

hi all,im a bit lost as to where and how to install expansion joints,not installed any huge floors as yet but what size of area are we talking about before i start installing expansion joints? is it simply a case of instead of grout going in i would use Silicon instead?cheers:stupid:
