Hello, I am close to tiling my new ground floor extension, bathroom, and wetroom and could do with some handy advise / pointers from some friendly trusted tilers out there.

My first job is to tile my new extension floor. The area is approx 11m2 as my new kitchen will already been down. This will be a new screeded floor so should set me up nicely for my first job. Flat and all square edges. I'm looking at laying porcelain tiles down (600x300). Can I just lay these with a decent adhesive? I hear BAL is the one to use. Does it really matter which make you go for or just down to personal preference?

My second job is the bathroom but more taxing will be the wetroom area. Now my builder has suggested to tile straight to the block work in here as he said plasterboard would just eventually get wet. Is this the best way to tile a new wetroom? I was thinking of laying a membrane down on the screed floor to prevent any future crack problems (ground floor). The shower itself will be attached to a partition wall which I was going to add an aquablock to.
Also the height of the room is about 4m to the pitch of the roof. I was looking at tiling up to about 2m then just having dot dabbed wall from then on up with a decent water proof paint around the top.
Does this all sound sensible? Or am I missing anything which could give me problems in the future?

Sorry for the long post but I am fairly new to tiling as you probably sussed so any help now could potentially save me alot of work/poblems.

Thanks

Hi and welcome to the forums.

It always amazes me that builders know best? His advice that you tile straight onto blockwork is disgraceful, any pin holes in your grout and the blockwork will just soak up the water for ages, you wont even know you have a problem until the tiles fall off, and who might they land on and injure? Your family maybe?
All wet areas need to be lined with aqua panels or plasterboard and then tanked, installed correctly this will protect from leaks. You can tank the whole wet room including the floor, corners need reinforcing with tape as do pipe outlets etc. There is a lot of prep in a wet room and you need to do it now rather than have costly errors later. Builders......dont you just love them..........:mad2:

Well there you go. Thanks for the prompt reply.

So let me just get this clear. The whole area can be plastered and then tanked. Doing this properly would keep all the plaster inpenetrable to the water? What is the difference with Aquapanels? Do Aqua panels still require tanking? Would I also need to tank above 2m where direct water would not be sprayed?

Thanks again

Aqua panels do not need to be tanked however the joints and corners do to prevent seepage. You can use moisture check (green ) plaster board for the walls and tank onto this again paying particular attention to corners and where pipes will enter the room.
You can use aqua panels all over if you prefer but that could be costly and they are only needed in areas of high exposure to water. If you tank to 2m height you will be fine.
Plaster board does not need to be skimmed as this will reduce the weight allowance on the walls.

Keep asking questions while you are at the stage you are with the building works.

:welcome:Agree with Diamond, builders have some strange ideas about tiling. I have not come across many block walls flat enough to tile, bad idea anyway. Just a point about the kitchen floor you say the screed is flat, it might be worth checking with a 2m edge. A large format tile needs a really flat floor.Good luck:thumbsup:

Thanks Phil. I think I'm going to plasterboard and then tank up to 2m around the whole area. Maybe still aquaboard the partition wall which the shower will sit on. My screed has not yet been laid. I currently have a drain waste in the centre of the floor which will have the gulley set into the screed. My builder says he going to level the screed with a slope from the corners to allow for the water drain. I assume I will still need to skim the remaing plaster above the 2m line and in the roof followed by a waterproof paint finish. My tiles for the wetroom are only 30x20 so should be small enough to allow for the slopes.

If your tiles are 30x20 you may still need to mitre, for falls. Pics would help for more advice from members.
