Hi and welcome to the forum Tom.
For external works, you'll need something with a receiver, no laser I'm aware of will show up outside to any great extent, however a green laser has to be the way to go. Red will be next to useless.
You'd still need a conventional string line or chalk line to work in conjunction with your laser.
Most lasers I've encountered with a receiver will work to about a 50m distance.
