eye tests for drivers

just seen on our local news the police are randomly checking peeps eyesight ,if you fail at roadside you get an instant Ban ,i have never really understood how reading letters/numbers on a plate relats to being able to see other cars, van's, lorries, hazards, low-light, bright light, maybe we should be looking at a newer test ,in an opticians maybe ??
what do you road users think ?

In a way I kind of agree though. The distance of reading a plate is not far at all & is easy enough to read. If you can't read it, your practically blind & so shouldn't be driving.

When you take your driving test you do this test , so if your eyesight alters , then you should get glasses.. regular eye tests keep this in check .

But seriously, people really need to have regular eye tests, the amount of people I know who need glasses for driving/reading etc and don't wear them is ridiculous. If police have the equipment to test eye sight and find that you need glasses but, aren't wearing any, surely that's dangerous driving?
