I did this very thing on an operational fireplace last year. Stuck the tiles down to the existing tiles with bal ptb rapid set. To be fair the existing tiles had collapsed and cracked so no scoring was needed. Not the most professional job in the world but they are still,there and not showing any signs of issues.
