First bathroom

Hi, This is my first post so please go easy on me. I have my first bathroom to do for a friend and was wondering what I should use for the floor so that i can tile on it. I presume it has to be waterproof but was wondering what is best to use and roughly how much it costs.

Hi there,a lot depends on the existing floor and what kind of tiles you are using ie porcelain,ceramic etc etc,if you give all the information about the job then you will get all the answers on the forum,if you havent introduced yourself on the new members area then go there as well,real friendly bunch on this website.Cheers

Its ceramic tiles but not sure what size yet as he hasnt made up his mind. The existing floor is floorboards in a fairly new house but there is a little give in them.

Before overlaying the floor make sure all the floorboards are secure.

Two obvious choices here are 15mm-18mm ply screwed down every 300mm minimum or 10mm backerboard layed on a 6mm bed of flexi adhesive and screwed down at least every 300mm. Ply should be primed, backerboard doesn't require it.

The floor should now be ready for tiling.

There are other things on the market like ditra matting etc, but you should be fine with either of the two above.

use marine plywood on boards DO NOT PRIME if you are using two part flexi as primer reacts with the polimer follow instructions on the bag
