Fitting Travertine onto plasterboard - how to fit plasterboard safely.

Hi,

We have brought 600 x 400 x 12 travertine for wall and floor in a small bathroom. The plasterwork was old and as I am aware plaster cannot take the weight of travertine will all be removed and 12.5mm plasterboard / moisture resistant gyproc used to line the walls. However, the tiles are very heavy and I am worried about the weight on the plasterboard although I know it can take up to 32kg. I am wondering how best to attach the plasterboard to the brick walls to ensure this is safe. In this case, is it okay to dot and dab the plasterboard onto the brick, perhaps using more than usual to ensure it is safe? If not, what would be best to help support it further and how?

Any advice much appreciated as we just want to get this right!

You could dot and dab the boards and once they've set , mechanically fix it to the wall with plug and screws through the areas you have dotted and dabbed! Just make sure your drilling into any pipe work or electrics!

You'll need to use a cement backer board mechanically fixed, not plasterboard for the weight of your tile plus addy plus grout.

Personally I would have strapped the walls out in a frame the fixed cement boards to this with screw and fischer washers.

I Meant to say cement boards instead of just saying boards , something like hardi or similar! Like a few of the others stated above!

Screws into blockwork can pull moisture through to the stone so be careful!

Why would moisture be pulled from the blockwork, it would have a cavity from the external brick wall...

Aye, quite a silly statement really.
If it was damp it would soak through the dabs more

Tile backer board 12 mm
screwed to batten at 600 centres
