Fixing porcelain tiles on existing ceramic

Evenin' all, first timer here.

My minion is currently installing a new bathroom for me, and my wife has insisted on these goddamn porcelain tiles which are starting to seem to be more hassle than they at first seemed.

My man (did i say minion earlier? oops ) wants to lay the new tiles on the existing ceramic, but it seems we need some very expensive AD1 additive at 56 quid a gallon.

The porcelain tiles are large and quite heavy, but do we really need this additive, or can we lay onto the ceramic by scoring the old tiles.

Any help would be much appreciated, ta.

Yes it is walls... so why's that then, this isn't the response i was expecting.

hi heebee,,the reason being you already have tiles on the walls,,adding large heavy porcelain and more adheive will be far too heavy for the walls to cope and could result in a disaster

You can only hang a certain amount of weight per sqr mtr to a wall substrate..

Depending upon whats under those tiles substrate wise then you will be well over weight for plastered walls or plasterboard with 2 lots of tiles and especially those big porcelain ones...

Agree with Dave. weight of original tiles, porcelain tiles are them self are heavy, plus adhesive,you don't know what the original wall is, rip off and start afresh............

I believe its something like 34 kilos max on plasterboard..

But seriously, remove the old to make way for the new.
