Discuss Floating Floor and Tiles mix? in the British & UK Tiling Forum area at TilersForums.com.

Hi all,

Been asked to lay tile on a floating floor thats made up of 3x2 joists sitting on top of a concrete floor and has 18mm ply screwed into the joists.. Is this do-able on this floor type as ive never experienced tiling on a floor of this construction?

The floor also has a slight bounce where 2 sheets of ply meet however I think this could be overcome by either lifting the ply and laying a new whole sheet as room is only 2.5m2 or laying new ply say 12mm ontop of current 18mm ply but am open as always to suggestions?

Thanks

You obviously have reservations about tiling on it!
You will no doubt be advised never to tile on a floating floor.
Some adhesive manufacturers state that their products are suitable for tiling onto floating floors - but they always put the onus back on the tiler to make the substrate deflection free.
Its your call!

If it has a frame work then it isn't classed as a floating floor in some aspects but if the frame isn't fixed then this is where movement could happen but you shouldn't get as much movement as you would with a floor just onto insulation like the majority of floating floors are.

The movement you have could just be a joint with no support, so worth checking before you tile and probs will need over boarding for extra stability.

strictly speaking this isnt a floating floor construction

its one type of warm floor construction where the flooring is fixed to battens fixed to the floor with insulation batts between the battens, this is not a floating floor but often gets called such

the other type of warm floor construction is where the floor is floated independantly on a subbase of insulation, this floor causes problems with tiling as the extra weight may compress the insulation over time
