floor tiles and marley floor tiles?

hi all just wondered what the best way is to lay floor tiles on top of marley floor tiles thanks.

The best way would be to remove the marley tiles before tiling.

Vinyl and thermoplastic floor tiles can contain asbestos. The tile backing may also contain asbestos paper.
Where does asbestos hide?

thanks for the feedback guys... it all helps and i spoke to the guy at the tile shop and he told me to use pva but im not sure the thing is im currently at college doing a wall and floor course but i dont really get taught these things so if you could give me some feedback on pva on marleys it would be very useful thanks again kidfranky.

You must remove the marley tiles. then the belt an brace way is to give the floor a good clean and put a slurry prime. A slurry prime should consist of 1 part adhasive, 1 part water and 1 part acrylic primer. mix it all together, apply to floor and allow to dry. then fix your tiles as normal.

Hi mate,If the marleys are well stuck down,clean the floor with sugar soap,Then use a flexy addy,think when i did one i used a Dunlop spf.

woodie, what's a "big mutt"?

and, considering I have limited tiling knowledge, what's so bad about marley tiles?

a 'big mutt' is a heavy duty floor scraper which weighs a bit but it's well worth the effort. i bought mine either from screwfix or machinemart can't remember but it's a beast :santa_cheesy: and marley tiles are a pain in the a**e they become very brittle and come up in pieces

When you remove the tiles, you'll need to remove the bitumen too.

I have just removed some vinyl floor tiles and been left with acrid smelling bitumen (I assume) adhesive. The tile shop guy (I've read the comments about their advice!) told me it would take ages to remove and it was ok to simply tile over the top.
The floor is concrete underneath, I have tried to remove it with a floor scraper but it is taking ages (4m x 4m area)
Question is do I have to remove it? (as per PI quote above) and if so are there any chemical solutions to help lift it? (its been down donkeys years)
